WHEREAS, Dysautonomia is a group of medical conditions that result in a
malfunction of the autonomic nervous system, which is responsible for essential
bodily functions such as respiration, heart rate, blood pressure, digestion,
temperature control and more; and
WHEREAS, many forms of Dysautonomia are considered rare or orphan
diseases, such as Multiple System Atrophy and Pure Autonomic Failure,while other
forms are quite common such as Diabetic Autonomic Neuropathy,
Neurocardiogenic Syncope and Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome. There
is a lack of awareness about these conditions amongst the medical community and
the general public; and
WHEREAS, Dysautonomia can impact people of all ages, races and
backgrounds, including individuals living in Cape Canaveral; and
WHEREAS, some forms of Dysautonomia can be very disabling and this
disability can result in physical pain, social isolation, stress on the families of those
impacted, and financial hardship; and
WHEREAS, increased awareness about Dysautonomia can help patients get
diagnosed earlier, and can help foster support for individuals and families coping
with Dysautonomia; and
WHEREAS, we seek to recognize the contributions of the professional
medical community, patients and family members who are working to educate our
citizenry about Dysautonomia in Cape Canaveral; and
NOW THEREFORE, I, Bob Hoog, Mayor of the City of Cape Canaveral,
Brevard County, Florida, do hereby proclaim October 2016 as
DYSAUTONOMIA AWARENESS MONTH
