The Recreation Center has had a full schedule of in ents this past quarter
with classes, leagues and special events. We've had a strong quarter of tennis
64 shuffleboardracquetball is "holding its own".
Gator Bill was here January 26th with his reptile show. (report attached)
The Brevard County Skate Park was scheduled for February 21-24. It was
open after school on Thursday (the 21') then rained all day long on both Friday
and Saturday. Sunday was a good day and the kids really enjoyed themselves.

March brought, of course, the 12' annual Patriots' Day Parade. The weather
was gorgeous and even thou10-t the Navy Band was not here, it was a good
parade. Forttmately we have great volunteers in the City to :assist with this
event as it takes a lot of people to "pull it together". (report attached)
The Easter Egg Hunt was held on Saturday, Marcia 30. We found a new
bunny this year (Sandee retired) and it worked out just fine. (report attached)
The shuffleboard courts are scheduled to he resurfaced the end of April. I'm
waiting for the bulk of the snowbirds to "fly north" as the courts will have to be
closed for approximately one week.
Lifeguard services began on March 29', weekends only 'until school is out.
Merritt Island Christian School is utilizing the tennis courts for their
praetiees and home games.
Brevard Special Olympics began practicing on March 24' for their
shuffleboard competition in early June.
Final payment has been received for the boardwalk at Manatee Sanctum,'
Park. Total reimbursement was $112.500, which is 75% of the $150,000
FRDAP grant.
I've contracted with em Company to install two new score ards on
the ba fields at Canaveral City Park. That will leave one final component to
the $50,000 (no match) bgrant which is the dition of a basketba
court at the Park.r e court will set along side the existing court.
I am working on the commencement documents that must be subm
approved by EP before any fiends can be encumbered for the anatee
Sanctuary Park, Phase II $150,000 F grant.

The shuffleboard eourts vere resurfaced the end olApril. The shufflers are
very pleased with the outcome.
Manatee Sanctuary Park Boardwalk dedication was held on May 20th, The
Firkins family was pleased with the event, and the attendees that I spoke with
agreed that the boardwalk is very impressive.
Solomon's Porch Christian Fellowship meets each Sunday morning at the
Recreation Center. Their first meeting was on Easter Sunday. They are
paying the appropriate rental rate for the use ofthe facility.
The annual Spring Fling Racquetball Tournament was held on May 3, 4' &
5th. A report is attached.
Merritt Island Christian School held a tennis camp on our courts the week of
June 10th. They met from S a.m. to 12 noon Monday through Friday and had 4
tennis coaches working with them. There were 31 youths participating. The
appropriate eourt fee was collected.
PAL held an introductory cookout at Canaveral City Park on Saturday, June
1" to kickoff the simmer sports trailer program that is being held on
Wednesday mornings from 9:30 to 12:00 noon throughout the summer.
Thanks to Mayor Pro Tem Petsos for his efforts in getting this program in
Cape Canaveral. (flyer attached)
Summer Recreation began on June 3at Cape View Elementary School.
There are 100+ youths at -tending the program with 5 teachers. The kids go
to the Cocoa Beach swimming pool 2 days a week, bowling & skating one day
a week. Movies `n More is providing a free movie on Fridays for the program.
The Youth Center is open from 12 noon to 5:00 p.m. Monday - Saturday until
school resumes in August.
Weight Watchers is meeting at the Recreation Center on Thursday mornings
and Tuesday evenings.

I ask Joy Salamone to prolide me with some data on the summer recreation
program held at Cape View Elementary in June and July. Rather than editing
her report, I have, with her permission, attached it. She and her starch(' an
excellent job and provided a great serviee to the youths in the community. This
vas a huge undertaking on Joy's part and she, and her staff, are to he
commended.
Deputy John Hudgins from the P.A.L. program met weekly from 9:30 a.m.-
12 noon with the youths in the community at Canaveral City Park in June &
July. Ile conducted playground games, Le. soceer, kickball, basketball, softball,
etc.
Kingdom Animalia was presented to the community 111 Saturday, September
Ur. A report is attached.
The FRDAP grant application for Banana River Park was submitted to
D.E.P. on September 121. It will be sometime after the 2003 legislative
session ends before we find out ifour grant request is successful.
