Sixty-seven were from Cape Canaveral, six from Cocoa Beach, three from Merritt Island and one from Cocoa. The attendance at the Center this quarter: January — 381, an average of 16 per day February — 337, an average of 16 per day March --- 511, an average of 19 per day The Brevard County Traveling Skate Park was in Cape Canaveral February 10th-12th ; attendance was very light. (report attached) Gator Bill was at the Recreation Center on February 25th, along with his reptile "friends". One hundred eleven people were in attendance. (report attached) Space Coast Little League held their opening day ceremony at Canaveral City Park on Saturday, February 251h. Mayor Randels threw out the opening pitch. Games are scheduled through May. Thirty-six racquetball players attended a special racquetball clinic at the Recreation Center on March 8th. Professional player, Derek Robinson frorn Denver, Colorado, conducted the free clinic. Wilson Sports was the sponsor and in addition to paying for all the expenses of the pro, provided lots of giveaways, including racquets and playing equipment, to the attendees. This provided a great opportunity for our racquetball players to pick up tips from, and actually hit the ball around with a ranking professional. The Cape Canaveral Community Celebration was held at Manatee Sanctuary Park on Saturday, March 18th. The turn out was very good and everyone in attendance seemed to have a good time. (report attached) The Kiwanis Club raised over eight hundred dollars for their Cape View Elementary School projects. Thanks to all who helped make this event a success. Merritt Island Christian School has been renting the tennis courts at the Recreation Center for their varsity tennis team practices, and, two home matches. Special Olympics started using the shuffleboard courts for practice in March and will continue through June when their competition takes place. They are also using the horseshoe pits at Manatee Sanctuary Park for practice for the event. fitiecreatititia tit:into it:km-ill ttotientitit tietiii T.26 (1:ape 1'0 tte ) IY tithe Satiardatitt, t"tiiititinit. iii5un. itive (it) third u.istoretriiiiiitit iittitatillett, -veils the diali:tis for' isettictryttionsiiii. iltiarti.eiititilitat; tilt!, the stititte andatittiratitits gititite stattii tratittatittly) finatitaiirtit carne altioartii. on tteliatii at.lay („ttape litteriiittentaniyi !titaltiteitit. th.e locitt tits() begitan. iiiitigthits at. tine . . antl, siTiorts at: (itti,...itittaiverati infesiix„ th.i.tity tile first. itteries hirh tics iiiitisetit ettrittitintitie enteinitis llas been. ctiperi datitio throtitith Siatittrailaty since :kit/as dismissititiii, itylaiin attentitanteciti linitay arid pitti" itiinte„ tiatiict tifaitnittioinint beeiti iittintt .Itiatinitatetti niaitnttain.ed. is IA/ell Lity ritliblitit. tiratietiiiiciiin tittri eirriirticatittxt „irtiinte ititas aryl. rteeeritimitio tin. iotittie tiiiiiiiiiielptitertin eve traelti (Alia/ ittientse ttlat titateinitianiitiiiitetten reserviiiiiii, tit ()It ttitlat riot lia::91 e(11,Ltiprileflt ilaS [...),C.',!42;:111. Box 326 Cape Canaveral, Florida 32920 PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT QUARTERLY REPORT Y-SEPTE ER 2006 Three of our five tennis courts were resurfaced in August; the remaining two are scheduled for resurfacing in October. The shuffleboard courts will also be resurfaced in October. The replacing of the tennis court fencing, which began the previous fiscal year, was completed in July. The racquetball court observation deck fencing was also replaced and the railing repaired and painted. Additional fencing was installed at Cape View Park. The first base dugout, which was destroyed in the hurricane two years ago, was replaced to accommodate the new co-ed softball league. The last day for lifeguard service this year was August 9th, The Youth Center resumed regular hours the day school resumed, August 9th. Average attendance per day: July 27, August 22 & September 22. Manatee Sanctuary Park was reserved in September for a Labor Day Picnic. Groups and families used, just did not reserve, the pavilion. Now that the weather is getting nice, we have been receiving inquiries and reservations. The Recreation Coordinator's events have been well received in the community, In July he continued the Summer Nights at the Park for the kids which began in June and also held a basketball clinic for youths (report attached). In August he started an adult 3 on 3 asketball League and a 10-week after school playground program for 3rd and 4th graders on Tuesdays and 5th and 6th graders on Wednesdays (report attached). The 3 on 3 Basketball League finished in September and he began a Mixed Doubles Tennis League. This league consists mostly of retirees. He also established an Adult Game Day on Thursdays, which started slow but is beginning to pick up. The Center is open for drop -ins to play whatever board and/or card games they choose. I expect to see the numbers increase when the winter visitors begin to arrive. UPCOMING SPECIAL EVENTS INCLUDE: Fall Festival @ Manatee Sanctuary Park on Saturday, October 14th, Monster Mash Halloween Street Dance, Monday, October 30th, 31' Anniversary Racquetball Tournament, November 3rd 4th and 5th. The Recreation Coordinator began the quarter with the Fall Festival at Manatee Sanctuary Park on October 14th. (report attached) He plans to schedule this as an annual event. The Halloween Street Dance was held in the Annex parking lot on October 30th. (report attached) The annual Community Health Fair, on November 8th, was well attended although seemingly not as many people were seeking flu shots as in past years. This probably can be attributed to there being a huge supply of vaccine available this year. (report attached) The 31st Anniversary Racquetball Tournament was held on November 3rd, 4th and 5th The weather was perfect and all the participants had an enjoyable time. This tournament is the longest running outdoor tournament in the state. Much of the credit for its success goes to the tournament directors. They work very hard to secure sponsors and to see that the 3 day event runs smoothly. (report attached) The adult co-ed softball league finished a ten -week schedule with a tournament on December 16thtl Five teams participated, (report attached) The Recreation Coordinator completed a ten -week after school playground program for youths in 2nd...th grades. The Youth Center is open from 3:00-6:30 p.m. after school each day and is open on days the youths are not in school from 12 noon to 5:00 p.m. The Center is closed on Sundays and City holidays. They had parties at Halloween and Christmas. The youths put up decorations, brought in food and beverages, played games, and had a great time. Attendance: October — 504, an average of 19 per day November — 426, an average of 19 per day December — 530, an average of 22 per day The water fountain for Cape View Park arrived and the School Board has agreed to pour the concrete pad and install the fountain. I am awaiting approval from them on two pieces of play equipment and 2 benches that I plan to order. Both pieces will accommodate the pre-school age children that use the park. have submitted the closeout documents to the State for reimbursement for expenditures at Banana River Park. Two benches have been added on the fishing/observation platform and concrete pads were poured for the picnic tables. There are still issues with Stottler, Staggs & Associated. Four 6 foot benches have been ordered for the horseshoe pits. The concrete pads have been poured and the benches will be assembled and installed as soon as they arrive. I have been quoted a mid January shipping date.
