A report is attached. Kingdom Animalia was here on Saturday February 261. Seventy -tour people attended a report is attached. 'Me Manatee Sanctuary Park Dedication/Community Celebration was deemed a success. (a report is attached.) Thanks to the Council members who cooked (440 hot dogs) and die staff members and volunteers who helped make this a memorable day. 'Elie Streets Department did an excellent job of preparing the park for the dedication. I am ordering grills to be placed on the south side of the pavilion. SSA is preparing a design/build proposal for the horseshoe pits. The annual Easter Egg Hunt WaS held at Canaveral City Park on Saturday, March 26'1'. One hundred ninety five children, pre-school — 31`1 grad as, participated in the hunt. There were 2,300 candy and toy filled eggs available to the children. Eighty-two children turned in specially marked eggs for prizes. Staff served cookies and punch and the Easter Bunny provided great photo opportunities for the parents and grandparents who accompanied the children. SSA has completed the site plan for Banana River Park and is proceeding with development. 1 have been working with Sharon llorton, Cape View Elementary School Principal, regarding the playground, It has been determined where the new fencing and gates are to be installed, once the joint use agreement is in place. The Youth Center was open fibril noon-5 p.m. during spring break. Attendance: January - 458 (avg. 19 per day) February - 213 (avg. 15 per day) March - 454 (avg. 17 per day) 'Pie Spring Fling Racquetball Tournament will be held on April 22nd, 23rd & 201. Box 326 Cape Canaveral, Florida 32920 email:parknrec@earthlink.net RECREATION DEPARTMENT QUARTERLY REPORT April -June 2005 The annual Spring Fling Racquetball Tournament was held April 22-24th. The weather was nice, the tournament was full, the sponsors were happy and a good time was had by all! (Report attached) A local company held a company picnic luncheon at Manatee Sanctuary Park in April and there was a wedding on the boardwalk/reception in the pavilion in May. We've had inquiries for the pavilion for weddings but when informed that alcoholic beverages are prohibited in City parks, they usually lose interest quickly. A new kid's karate class began in May. George Denson is the instructor. George is a 6th degree black belt who owned his own karate school in North Carolina prior to relocating to Florida. In addition to teaching karate, he owns a video production company and released two karate training dvd's in September of 2004. Bill Young donated two very nice trash receptacles for the pavilion at Manatee Sanctuary Park. (acknowledgement letter attached) Space Coast Little League season was officially over on May 201h with closing activities being held at the pool pavilion in Cocoa Beach (opening day ceremony was scheduled in Cape Canaveral) The Youth Center began "summer break" hours on May 25' and is open from 12 noon until 5:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The hours will remain in effect until school resumes on August 9th. Attendance during this quarter: April — 413/average of 18 per day May - 415/average of 17 per day June - 416/average of 15 per day Work just started on the soccer field at Banana River Park. SSA expects to finish their part in a couple of months; the remaining grant components should be complete by the end of the calendar year. Box 326 Cape Canaveral, Florida 32920 (321) 868-1226 email: parknrec@earthlink.net RECREATION DEPART NT QUARTERLY REPORT JULY — SEPTE 1 ER 2005 The Recreation Center was closed the week ofJuly llth so ceramic tile could be installed in the restrooms, lobby, hallway and outer office. The results are exceptional. During the same week, new (green) vinyl coated 10' fencing was installed on the tennis courts 1 & 2 and the line posts & top rails were painted green. It turned out great and the remainder of the (original from 1975) fencing will be replaced in this budget year. The exterior of the racquetball courts was repainted in August. Lifeguard service ended in the City on Labor Day. The Youth Center was open from noon-5 p.m. in July and August until school resumed on the 8th, at which time the hours changed back to 3:00-6:30 p.m. Monday -Friday, noon-5 p.m. on Saturday. The air hockey table was replaced in the center this summer. Attendance for JULY — 371 and average of 15 per day AUGUST — 430, an average of 16 per day SEPTE KER — 386, an average of 16 per day Work is progressing (very slowly) on Banana River Park. The Brevard County Traveling Skate Park was in the City on September 30th, October 13t & 2'. Several of the skate sessions were rained out. A Florida Recreation Development Assistance Program (a.k.a. F AP) grant was submitted in the amount of $150,000 (City portion $37,500.00) for the playground renovation at Canaveral City Park. It will be after the 2006 legislative session ends before we know if our project will be funded. UPCOMING SPECIAL EVENTS October 28th — "Monster Mash" Halloween Street Dance November 4th, 5th & 6th — Recreation Complex 30th Anniversary Racquetball Tournament November 9th — Community Health Fair (includes fly shots) December 11th — Holiday Tree Lighting Program (includes the Dickens Carolers & Cape View Elementary School Rocket Chorus) ECREATION DEPA T ;'-E T UARTEY REPRT OCTOBER MBER 2005 The Brevard County Traveling Skate Park was in the Annex Parking lot on October 1st and 2nd. Attendance was low, only 27 skaters on Saturday and Sunday combined. The Monster Mash Halloween Street Dance was held in the Annex Parking Lot On October 28th. A report is attached. The 30th Anniversary Racquetball Tournament, commemorating the 30th year the Recreation Complex has been open was held on November 4th, 5th & 6th. There were 90 participants in this year's tournament. A tournament report is attached. Information regarding the Recreation Complex which may be of interest, A Building Committee was formed in early 1974 to work with Allen Engineering on the design & construction of the Complex, The vacant block of land the Complex sets on was County property and was deeded to the City; John Hurdle was the District II County Commissioner at the time. Frank McClay was the Mayor and Leo Nicholas and Ann Thurm were serving on City Council. Building committee members who are still residing in the area are Lamar Russell, Bob Laws, Nancy Hanson, Harry Rhame, John Butler and Dan Keane. The dedication ceremony was held on December 20, 1975. The annual Community Health Fair was held on November 9th. A report is attached. Girl Scout Troop 440 had their investiture/luncheon at the Recreation Center on December 10th. Standing room only at the Holiday Tree Lighting Program held in the Community Room at the library. Thanks to Mayor Randels for m.c.ing the event and to Santa Bob. Communications Concepts donates the labor to set up, and the _ se of, a sound system every year. The Cape View Elementary School Chorus did a fantastic job. Thanks to Isabelle for corning in on Sunday to accommodate the program, Manatee Sanctuary Park was rented by Coastal Fuels on December 10th for an employee picnic, the Kiwanis Club Pancake Breakfast was held there on October 29th and our Public Works epartment employees had a Thanksgiving luncheon at the park on November 17th page 1 t The Youth Center had a Christmas party on Monday, December 19th. Not only were they celebrating the holidays, but also it was the first day of the school break! The youths brought in party foods (supplemented by city supplies) and had special games and activities that supervisor Mike Hammons planned for them. Hours were extended to 12 noon — 5:00 p.m. during the days they were out of school. Attendance at the Center during the quarter was: October — 15 per day November — 15 per day December — 17 per day Classes are filling up due to the influx of snowbirds in the community. Shuffleboard, tennis and racquetball court activity is increasing due to snowbirds, visitors and great playing weather.
