JANUARY-MARCH 2004
Gator Bill gave a presentation at the Recreation Center on Saturday, January 24th to an enthusiastic crowd of
148. A report is attached.
Space Coast Little League began practicing on February 10th, Opening Day ceremony was held at Canaveral
City Park on February 28th. There are only two teams from Cape Canaveral (8 from Cocoa Beach) playing in
the league this year; a major team with 14 youths and a coach -pitch team with 12 kids.
Special Olympics began using the shuffleboard courts on March 21s1 to practice for the countywide competition,
which will be held in June. They are here on Sunday afternoons for an hour.
L.A. Construction Services broke ground at Manatee Sanctuary Park on March 1s1. They seem to be moving
right along. The foundation for the restrooms/pavilion has been poured, parking lot graded and the utilities are
being installed, While the grader was on site, I had them grade the fill that Bill Young donated so it can be
seeded.
We have a new tennis pro on board. Tom Dundis is a USPTR certified instructor. Tom was with us a few years
ago & moved to the West Coast. He has returned to Florida and teaches not only here, but in a couple of
different centers. He is also a certified golf professional.
We should know by May or June if the two FRDAP grants we applied for are funded by the legislature. Of the
223 applications, the Banana River Park Grant ranked 70th, Canaveral City Park Grant ranked 151. Total
requested funding this year was 30 million, last year only 6 million was funded (27 projects) Hopefully there
will be more funding available this year.
SSA has completed the environmental evaluation of the IITF property. There doesn't seem to be many options
for development. SSA's recommends an elevated boardwalk, access and parking could be a problem.
Cover letter to the report is attached.

QUARTERLY REPORT
APRIL, MAY & JUNE 2004 -/ /
April was a very busy month for special recreation activities:
The annual Easter Egg .1-11. n. was held at Canaveral City Park on Saturday, April 14'1'.
Two hundred and three children, ranging in age from toddlers through 3rd grade students
were present. Two thousand candy and toy filled eggs were available, 40 prizes were
distributed. The Easter Bunny (volunteer Morgan Felteau) was present for photo
opportunities for the parents & grandparents while refreshments were being served.
(a report is attached)
The Brevard County Traveling Skate Park was in Cape Canaveral April 1 6ffi-18th. The
number of participants is in decline. (a report is attached)
The annual Mike Reynolds Spring Fling Racquetball Tournament was held on April 23,
24 & 25. There were eighty- three participants. (a report is attached)
Little League season is officially over.
The Special Olympic shuffleboard team practiced on our courts on Sunday afternoons
during April & May. Competition was in June.
Merritt Island Christian School used our tennis courts for their varsity practice and games
during April and May. They also rented 3 of the courts for a tennis camp, which was
held 3 hours a day for a five day period during the week ofJune
I have been notified that the FRDAP grant for Banana River Park has been funded.
Contract approval for this project will be on the July 20'h agenda.
Manatee Park completion is near. All utilities are in place, i.e. electric, water, sewer. The
contractor experienced a delay in the shipment of the privacy stalls for the restrooms,
which of course, delayed the final plumbing installations. Installation will take place as
soon as the materials are delivered. Irrigation, entryway beautification, fence, kiosk
assembly and flag pole installation should be complete by mid July. Tables, benches,
bike rack and a park sign are on order,
The Recreation Department partnered with Cape View Elementary for a 6-week
recreation program. The program took place at the school and was offered as an
extension to the summer academic program. Recreation activities took place each
weekday from 11:30-3:30 p.m. Sixty-five children were registered in the progam.
The Youth Center is open throughout the summer school vacation from 12 noon to
5:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday. The 8-year-old pool table was recently replaced
at the Center. Fran and Mike accompanied eight youths that are registered at the Youth
Center to Funntasia for 18 holes of mini -golf on June 9th. The Recreation Department
paid their entry fee (at a negotiated reduced amount), they rode the trolley free, and,
Funntasia gave them 10 free tokens to play the machines....still not a lot of interest. The
scheduled July 13111 field .trip to Funntasia has been cancelled due to the low turnout.
Attendance at the Youth Center has been steady, the numbers are generally lower in June
and July due to vacations. School resumes on August 10th

PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT QUARTERLY REPORT
JULY, AUGUST & SEP I E ER, 2004 14/
The Youth Center supervisor, Mike Hammons, instituted a reward system for the youths
who attended the center in June and July. Prizes that were donated by various businesses
and were awarded based on a point system. Points were earned for participation in
activities, attitude and attendance.
Youth Center attendance:
July 428 — Average per day 16.46
August 324 - Average per day/12.96
September 269 — Average per day/20.69
The summer recreation program, which the City funds at Cape View Elementary School,
ended on July 16th
Lifeguard protection on the City's beaches "officially" ended on the day after Labor Day.
The hurricanes took a toll on both classes and court play. Most of our down time was in
September as we lost 9 days with Frances and 5 days with Jeanne. Even when we were
back "up and nmning" the tennis court lights all needed to be readjusted, so evening
play was not possible. Only 3 tennis courts are usable now at night as we are awaiting
realigning again. Our income was drastically reduced in September with lost court
time due to the hurricanes and excessive rains, and, with many classes cancelled.
The GOOD NEWS however, is that our court income (tennis, racquetball &
shuffleboard) for last fiscal year was still up ($940) from the previous year.
