REPORT
JANUAILY, FEBRUA1tY & MARCH, 2001.
The Recreation Department was very busy the past quarter with
classes, special cy►muiunity events, leagues and "the snowbirds".
Special Community events included a presentation by Gator Bill.
on Saturday, January 27' . Approximately 150 people attended
this event. (report attached)
On Saturday, March 10`" the 11''' Annual Patriots Day Parade took
place. Fortunately, we have many dedicated volunteers who enjoy
assisting with the parade. The United States Navy Band performed
a concert at 2:00 in the afternoon in Xeriseape Park. I have had
some very positive feedback regarding the Patriots Day activities.
(report attached)
Youth Center attendance is on the rise - the supervisor, Mike
Hammonds, has scheduled some special activities for the attendees,
i.e. tournaments, parties and every Saturday pizza is ordered. The
youths help plan the events, and when food and su►inks are part of
the activity, they volunteer to bring different lbod items from home.
The Center was open from noon to 5:00 p.m. each weekday of
spring break to accommodate the needs of the youths.
January - 420/an average of 16.50 per day
February-513/an average of 23.31 per day
March-601/an average of 23.11 per day
United Space Alliance, National Management Association, Chapter
S30 has officially adopted Patriots Park. The sign ► cknowledgin
the adoption will be hung on the east fence at the park, visible from
AlA, as desired by the Association. The sided agreement is
attached.
Little League opening Day was held on Satctrday, March 3'.
There are scheduled games 4 days each week. The only use for the
senior field is for occasional practices. This is due to the lack of
participation by the older baseball players >, nd girls (softball).
Our new tennis professional is .Doris Lally. Doris is certified by the
United. States Professional. Tennis Registry and brings years of
experience to the City.
The Manatee Sanctuary .l'ark .Boardwalk bid opening is Monday,
April 9' at 3:1 5 p.m.
The Recreation Board is concerned with the appearance of the
signage at the beach ends. They have requested that staff look at
reducing the number of sipls, and that the signs that remain are
more user friendly. The Recreation Department will be working
with the Street Department and possibly the Beautification Board
on this project.
I'm in the process of pricing bleachers and scoreboards per the
FRDAP want. I will be meeting soon with SSA to discuss the
Senior ballfield and additional basketball court & fencing as
required in the grant.

RECRFATION DEPARTMENT QUARTERLY REPORT
APRIL, MAY & JUNE, 2001
April was an eventfid month. An Easter Egg Hunt was held on the 14th. Two
hundred forty six children, from toddlers through third grade students, along
with parents, grandparents, friends tk, neighbors in tow, were in attendance.
The Easter Bunny (who incidentally has officially retired) was there to chat
with the children and provide a great photo opportunity. (report attached)
A very successful Spring Fling Racquetball Tournament was held on April
24th, 25' and 26'. The weather was perfect, which of course is a key ingredient
for a successful outdoor event. (report attached)
The activity at the Youth Center has picked up considerably. The supervisor
has scheduled some tournaments; they order pizzas on Saturdays and have had
a couple of "dance parties". The Center has been open from 12 noon to 0:00
p.m. Monday through Saturday since the day school was out. PAL has been on
site a couple of afternoons, trying to get some outdoor games going. Due to the
heat, the kids haven't been too interested.
Attendance:
April - 598 (avg. 24 youths per day)
May - 704 (avg. 27 youths per day)
June - 481 (avg. 19 per day)
Construction on the boardwalk project at Manatee Sanctuary Park began in
mid June. Although the contract calls for a completion date 120 days from
commencement, the contractor is anticipating completion by mid August.
I was notified by the state that the submitted FRDAP Grant for Manatee
Sanctuary Park, Phase Il was funded. The contract and commencement
package has not yet been received. Phase II includes a picnic pavilion/
Restrooms, educational kiosk and a walking/jogging trail.
Summer programs began in June. In addition to the Recreation Department
programs, the 1Baptist Church of Merritt Island used (rented) three tennis
courts five afternoons during the seeond week ofJune. The Seafarers ministry
used Canaveral City Park pavilion for a special program that teens from
Tennessee conducted three mornings the third week in June.
Bell South removed the "infamous" pay telephone at Canaveral City Park.

DEPARTMENT '
QUARTERLY REPORT
JULY, AUGUST & SEPTEMBER 2001
The past quarter was one of summer activities for kids and special projects.
Tennis clinics, arts & crafts classes, free movies, karate classes, and free
afternoon use of the tennis and racquetball courts were among the activities
held for the kids. (report attached)
The Youth Center was open throughout the summer school vacation for six
hours, six days a week.
Attendances July - 510 (avg. 20.40 per day)
August - 586 (avg. 22.54 per day)
September - * 258 (avg.18.43 per day)
*The Youth Center interior was renovated in September. Wall paneling
was installed and the carpet replaced with commerical grade vinyl tile. All
ceiling tiles were replaced. The Youth Center opened in July of 1996 and this
face-lift was overdue. During the ten days the Center was closed, outside
activities were scheduled.
The tennis courts were resurfaced. The Nidy Company minimized the time
all five courts were closed by resurfacing the two courts on the north then
moving on to the three courts to the south. There were only three and one
half days that all five courts were down.
The FRDAP grant for Canaveral City Park has been at somewhat of a
standstill while the other projects were being administered but will now be a
priority. The eight sets of bleachers have been delivered; Public Works is
assembling them. A contractor will pour the concrete pads and Public Works
will deliver and anchor the bleachers to the pads. The County Parks
Maintenance Department worked for three days (at no charge to the City)
removing the infield on the senior field in preparation for a contractor to
come in and do final grading and laying sod. The conversion of the senior
field to a softball field was another component in the grant. Scoreboards will
