REPO 1Cr1'
JANUARY, FI B.RUJARY & MA1 CII, 2000
The Department's main focus for the quarter just ended was on the planning
and implementation of the 10" Annual Patriots' Day Parade & Navy Band
Concert, which was held on March 11m. The event took place, under ominous
skies, and was well received by the eoimnuniity. There were approximately 350
people in attendance at the Navy Band Concert in the afternoon. This event
requires a great deal of staff time and would not be possible without the
dedicated volunteers who lend their assistance each year, many who have
helped for several years. In addition to the volunteers, most all of the City's
personnel play a part in the "production" in one way or another.
The YMCA tried unsuccessfully to have an instructional six -week Flag
Football cline for youths ages 5-9, utilizing the senior ballfield at Canaveral
City Park. The Y intends to try some programs in Cape Canaveral during the
summer months.
Gator Bill and his many reptiles were at the Recreation Center on Saturday,
February 12th. Approximately S5 children & adults were hi attendance. A
report is attached.
Court play was good during the quarter and many of the classes ran at, and in
some eases above, capacity.
Our tennis pro, Chip Weber, accepted a full time tennis teaching position in
Syracuse, New York and Tom Dirndls, who is a certified U.S.P.T.A. teaching
professional, has filled that vaeanney.
Youth Center attendance:
January - 243 (an average of 9.72 per day ofoperatlon)
February - 227 ( average 9.S6 per day)
March - 272 (average 10.88 per day)
The Center was open from noon-5 p.m. during the week of sprhug break.
Elaine Gott from Plain English Writing Services, is currently evaluating the
probabilities of the City being successful in applying for a P-2000 grant to
purchase the Center Street property. She will also be resubmitting the grant
for the Devlin property on Ridgewood Avenue.
We have submitted two Florida Recreation Development Assistance
Program (FRDAP) grants. One grant, in the amount of $150,000 is to
construct the boardwalk at Manatee Park. That grant is ranked 131' out of
205 applications. The grant for Canaveral City Park in the amount of
$50,000 includes bleachers, scoreboards, a secxmd basketball court and
converting the senior baseball field to a softball field. That grant ranked 58th
out of 98 applie tioiui.
At this time the Senate has appropriated full funding and the House, partial
funding for the grants. As you well know, how it stands now and how it ends up
are entirely different. Even after it leaves the legislature the governor has line
item veto power.
Upcoming special events include and Easter Egg llunt at Canaveral City
Park on Saturday, April 22", and a Fishing Contest for youths 6-16 years of
age at Freddie Patrick Park on Saturday, May 13th. Kingdom Animalia had a
licensing dispute with the County and that event, scheduled for April 8 th, was
postponed.

3ATOR BILL REPTILE sF:oW
SATCRDAY, FEBRUARY 12,2
1:AMTO 12NOON
Approximately 85 people of all ages
attended the show. $72.00 was collected in
donations. Bill displayed several snakes
indigenous to Florida. No venomous species
were shown. Also some turtles, baby
alligators as well as a big seven year old
alligator (properly restrained).
He discussed their habitat requirements and
how they relate to other creatures in our
Florida ecosystem. He explained the Do's
and Don'ts when faced with these reptiles
and answered questions from the audience.
Interested persons were allowed to touch
them. Some people stayed after the show
with worrisome questions about gators and
snakes they had encountered here in Florida.
As usual, he put on a great show.
