HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes 07-28-15CULTURE AND LEISURE SERVICES BOARD MEETING MINUTES JULY 28, 2015 A Meeting of the Culture and Leisure Services Board was held on July 28th, 2015, at the Cape Canaveral Public Library, 201 Polk Avenue, Cape Canaveral, Florida. The meeting was called to Order at 5:30 p.rn. by Chairperson Gene Petre, The Secretary called the roll. MEMBERS PRESENT Gene Petre Chairperson Douglas Raymond Vice Chairperson John Dattilo Barry Schoenholz Maureen Michel Marlene Woodside Mickie Kellum OTHERS PRESENT Gustavo Vergara Molly Thomas Leisure Services Director Board Secretary ACTION/DISCUSSION ITEMS: 1. Approval of Meeting Minutes of May 26, 2015 Motion by Mrs. Woodside, seconded by Mr. Schoenholz to approve Meeting Minutes of May 26, 2015 as written. Vote on the motion carried unanimously. 2. Staff Reports Mr. Vergara reviewed his Staff Report and summarized Leisure Services activities/updates as follows: reminded board to stay current on upcoming changes via the City's weekly updates; noted success and popularity of summer youth programs, particularly the City's Summer Camp; reported high attendance and positive feedback for the Street Eats on Taylor Ave food truck event; recognized generous donations made by the VFW Post #10131 and Ladies Auxiliary for the Backpack Jamboree and youth sports scholarships; announced department's procurement of Commemorative Tree and Bench Program and the installation of first memorial bench at Manatee Sanctuary Park; announced the addition of Wallyball to the repertoire of available sports at the Recreation Complex; discussed the local history and cultural resource management projects of Leisure Services staff member, Molly Thomas, and their benefit to the city. Mr. Petre thanked Mr. Vergara for his Report. OLD BUSINESS: • Mr. Petre discussed possibility of reviving the Life Trail equipment sponsorship program. • Mr, Vergara cited that staff has found no established history of the program. • Mr. Petre raised issue of underutilization of Manatee Sanctuary Park — cites need of playground equipment and possibility of moving equipment from Banana River Park • Mr. Schoenholz cites that underutilization is a misconception and that each park resonates to its particular audience • Mr. Vergara discussed the possibility of obtaining a FRDAP grant to fund the purchase of playground equipment • Ms. Kellum made inquiry regarding the City's acquisition of Cherie Down Park • Mr. Vergara indicated that there has been no change in the status of that project NEW BUSINESS: Mr. Vergara announced funding approval for Phase I and Phase II improvements at Banana River Park At the request of Mr. Petre, Mr. Vergara described the amenities to be included in each phase Mr. Vergara affirmed plans for property demarcation between Banana River Park and Puerto Del Rio Mr. Petre reminded members that the next meeting of the Culture and Leisure Services Board is Tuesday, September 29, 2015.
