In an effort to preserve these historic records, the citizen has loaned the documents to the Leisure Services Staff so they can be digitized for future research accessibility. Staff has consulted Library of Florida History archivist Ben DiBiase to assist with the scanning process. Upon completion, copies of these documents will be available to the public at the Library of Florida History in Cocoa Village, in the Genealogy Department of the Central Brevard Library in Cocoa and via the City's public records database, accessible from our website. The original documents will be returned to the property owner. Chandler Cabin Staff submitted an updated Historical Structure Form for the Florida Master Site File, at the Florida Division of Historical Resources, for the building formerly known as the "Alma Beecher Cabin". The original file for the property, submitted by an independent survey company in the late 1990s, was out of date and contained numerous inaccuracies relating to the building's construction and the property's history. The updated file now recognizes the structure as "Chandler Cabin", named for its original owner, William W. Chandler, an early resident in the Artesia -Cape Canaveral area. Built in the early 1930s, the structure is important to both state and local history, as it is one of only two remaining whole palm log cabins in the state. Ensuring the accuracy of the Florida Master Site Files for this and other historical resources is essential to their long term protection. ry
