HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes 05-26-15CULT RE AND LEISURE SERVICES BOARD MEETING MINUTES MAY 26, 2015 A Meeting of the Culture and Leisure Services Board was held on January 27, 2015, at the Cape Canaveral Public Library, 201 Polk Avenue, Cape Canaveral, Florida. The meeting was called to Order at 5:30 p.m. by Vice Chairperson Douglas Raymond. The Secretary called the rolL MEMBERS PRESENT Douglas Raymond John Dattilo Barry Schoenholz Maureen Michel Marlene Woodside MEMBERS ABSENT Gene Petre Mickie Kellum Vice Chairperson Chairperson OTHERS PRESENT Gustavo Vergara Leisure Services Director Molly Thomas Board Secretary Joyce Hamilton Resident ACTION/DISCUSSION ITEMS: 1. Approval of Meeting Minutes of March 24, 2015 Motion by Mr. Raymond, seconded by Ms. Michel to approve Meeting Minutes of March 24, 2015 as written. Vote on the motion carried unanimously. 2. Staff Re orts Mr. Vergara reviewed his Staff Report and summarized Leisure Services activities/updates as follows: monthly food truck events to begin in July, will be hosted on Taylor Avenue; new adult sewing class set to begin in June; Summer Camp was enrolled to full capacity earlier than previous years, program viable for expansion in the future; Cape Canaveral Youth Center will host a free summer lunch program for children and teens with food supplied by Brevard County Schools, child hunger a noted issue in the community; VFW provides financial support for the current snack program benefitting Youth Center children. Mr. Raymond thanked Mr. Vergara for his Report. OLD BUSINESS: • Review of Student Art Show ensued, Board acknowledged participation challenges. • Resident Joyce FIamilton suggested: giving students and teachers greater initiatives, instituting themes and reaching out to schools earlier in the year. • Board resolved to increase engagement of school administrators. Talks regarding City's acquisition of Cherie Down Park continue, conditions of its procurement must serve the City's best interests as there would be a great deal involved with assuming responsibility of such an asset. NEW BUSINESS: Mr. Schoenholtz inquired as to the feasibility of art programs in the parks. Mr. Vergara cited participation/interest challenges, DCF requirements. Mrs. Woodside suggested the creation of technology course for seniors. Ms. Hamilton thanked the Leisure Services Staff for support during Leo Nicholas' Celebration of Life. Mr. Raymond reminded members that the next meeting of the Culture and Leisure Services Board is Tuesday, July 28, 2015.
