The Recreation Department had a very busy, and successful, first quarter in
1998.
The El Nino weather pattern played havoc with our court revenues, however,
our classes and special events flourished. There are currently five tennis and six
racquetball leagues playing weekly.
Beginning January 15fh, volunteers began opening the Youth Center for adults
from 9 a.m. to 12 noon weekdays. There was a rather dismal daily showing of
interest so February l3th was the last day of the experimental use of the Center
for adults. Perhaps we will try again next year.
Kingdom Animalia, an exotic animal demonstration, was held on Saturday,
January 17th at the Youth Center. One hundred ninety five (195) people
attended.
On Sautrday, February 21s1, Gator Bill and his "traveling reptile show" were at
the Youth Center. One hundred sixty (160) people were in attendance.
The Recreation Leader, who worked at the Youth Center on Saturday
afternoon and Friday and Saturday evenings, resigned in mid February. This
position remains open and has, along with Little League season being
underway, affected our attendance during this quarter. Attendance for
January 470, February 287 and March 195.
The new Recreation Complex sign on AIA has drawn a great deal of attention
and comments from the public. We have gained some new customers and it
seems as though we have many more telephone calls from people seeking
information on various classes and special events announced on the sign. The
Public Works Department is repairing the sign that was on AIA and it will be
installed on the property, most likely on the north side (Taylor Avenue).
We had well deserved, beautiful weather for the 8th Annual Patriots' Day
Parade and Celebration on March 14th. This event takes a great deal of
planning and preparation as well as staff and volunteer time. If you have
suggestions for future Patriots' Days, please share them with me - there is always
room for improvement!
Upcoming events include: Easter Egg Hunt, April 11 th, Health & Safety Fair, April
251h, Spring Fling Racquetball Tournament on May 1, 2 and 3, and a Fishing
Contest for kids on May 16th. Summer recreation activities will begin in June.
