Monday night kickball continues to battle with a three way tie for first place. Wednesday advanced racquetball has one week left of the regular season before playoffs begin. Wednesday intermediate tennis completed the third week of the season. Wednesday night kickball will start playoffs next week with the championship game scheduled for May 27. Staff is currently registering teams for a new season. Thursday intermediate tennis started the first night of a new league with eight players participating. Thursday night softball continues with two regular season games remaining. Special Projects Banana River Park Phase I Phase I of the Banana River Park project goes out for bid May 21, 2015. If all goes according to schedule, the City plans to award the contract by the end of July 2015 and construction will begin the following month. Banana River Park Phase II In accordance with requisites set by the F.I.N.D. Grant, the City is in the process of attaining an Environmental Resource Permit from St. Johns River Water Management District. Phase II of the Banana River Park project will move forward once all required authorizations are in place. Manatee Park Boardwalk The materials to refurbish the rails along the Manatee Sanctuary Park Boardwalk have been purchased. Maintenance Staff has already begun the necessary prep work to ensure the quality and longevity of this restoration proj ect. Special Events and Programs Adult Sewing Registration has begun for a new beginning adult sewing class. Meeting each Wednesday from 2:00 - 3:30 pm, the six week session will start June loth and end July 15'. Students will learn to operate a sewing machine, read a pattern, pin and cut fabric and make a tote bag as their final project. Cost to participate is $30 which includes the pattern. A limited number of Brother sewing machines will be available for use. Participation is limited to the first 10 students to register. Annual Egg Hunt The Annual Egg Hunt, took place on April 3' and was a huge success. 3,000 eggs were hidden on the ball fields and in the playground area. The children thoroughly enjoyed searching for them and the treats they contained. A big thanks to BCSO PAL and department staff for their assistance in making this event such a hit. Celebration of Life for Leo Nicholas A Celebration of Life took place Saturday, May 16, at Manatee Sanctuary Park. As former Mayor, City Manager, and Councilmember, Mr. Nicholas' contribution to the Cape Canaveral Community will never be forgotten. Fanners Market The Farmers Market has renewed its contract with the City and will continue to offer fresh produce, baked goods and handmade arts and crafts to the public. We are now able to host up to 24 vendors each week. The City is happy to be a part of this nationwide trend. www.brevardfarmersmarkets.com. Founders Dav Sprint Festival & Taste of Cape Canaveral This year's Founders Day Spring Festival was a great success. It was well received by vendors and guests alike. Hundreds of residents and visitors showed up to enjoy everything the event had to offer. Additionally, the Taste of Cape Canaveral portion of the event proved to be an effectual fundraiser for the Friends of the Library. i Friday Fest The April Friday Fest was well attended. The beverage stand was hosted by the City which, in turn, used the generated funds to offer youth sports scholarships to Cape Canaveral families unable to afford the registration costs for local programs. A great many thanks go out to the numerous board members and City employees who volunteered their time serving drinks for such a great cause. The May Friday Fest enjoyed beautiful weather. Event Staff received numerous compliments on the evening's entertainment, Electric Tide. J PfLI THIEVES IN,I',tl7G % C11N1' tin AP'o 1.019 Monthly Beach Cleanups with Sea Turtle Preservation Society The Sea Turtle Preservation Society continues to host its monthly beach clean-ups. The STPS provides gloves, bags, safety equipment and bottled water for each event. Their next event is scheduled for June 6th at Cherie Down Park between 8 and 10 am. The clean-ups are open to volunteers of all ages and are eligible to be logged as community service hours for those seeking to fulfill such requirements. National Kids to Parks Day Hundreds of thousands of children nationwide, including here in Cape Canaveral, take part in a grassroots movement to discover America's parks through play on Saturday, May 16, to commemorate National Park Trust's (NPT) fourth annual Kids to Parks Day. Mayor Rocky Randels recently proclaimed Kids to Parks Day in Cape Canaveral and encourages locals to participate by exploring Manatee Sanctuary Park and Canaveral City Park. A Youth Kickball Tournament took place at Canaveral City Park in partnership with Cape View Elementary' s P.T.O. to raise funds for refurbishment of the school's playgrounds. The Tournament included music, food, drinks and give-away prizes. As part of the evening celebration, PG rated Paddington was in the little league outfield at Canaveral City Park. This event was open to all ages and as always admission was free. These workshops are free to attend and open to the public. Oyster Mat Workshops teach Cape Canaveral citizens the importance of Florida's oyster reefs and how to take an active role in protecting our local ecosystems. 46,00, Sportinz Chance Summer Sports Camp Coach Donnie and Coach Julie will be hosting two sessions of their Summer Sports camp, for ages 3-7. In 2011, the following schools participated in the event: Cape View Elementary, Roosevelt Elementary, Ocean Breeze Elementary, Gardendale Elementary and Rockledge High School. • In 2012 the Leisure Services Department took over the Student Art Show and changed the date and location to be held in conjunction with our monthly February Friday Fest. Participating schools included: Cape View Elementary, Roosevelt Elementary, Rockledge High School, Merritt Island High School and Gardendale Elementary. • In 2013 participating schools included: Cape View Elementary, Roosevelt Elementary, Rockledge High School, Merritt Island High School and Gardendale Elementary. • In 2014 participating schools included: Cape View Elementary, Roosevelt Elementary, Rockledge High School and Merritt Island High School (Gardendale Elementary closed). • In late September 2015, invitations were extended to the art teachers and principals at each of the following schools: Cape View Elementary, Roosevelt Elementary, Freedom 7 Elementary, Mila Elementary, Our Saviour's Catholic School, Cocoa Beach Jr. /Sr. High School, Rockledge High School, Merritt Island High School and Edgewood Jr. /Sr. High School. Of all who were invited, only the following schools participated: Cape View Elementary, Roosevelt Elementary, Rockledge High School and Merritt Island High School. • Reminder emails are sent before the RSVP deadline. Schools are given the deadline of one week prior to the Show to deliver their artwork consisting of up to 21 pieces that the art teacher chooses to bring. Judging takes place on the Thursday prior to the Show so that teachers can be notified who won each award and the students can participate in the award ceremony. The award ceremony takes place on Friday evening with light refreshments being served. Summer Camp The 2015 Summer Camp season is upon us. Camp begins June 2 and all but two weeks are already at full capacity. Cost for residents is $35 per week and $45 for non-residents. Hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Before and after care are available for an additional fee. Activities include group games, sports, crafts, special entertainers and field trips. Registration is limited to 25 campers per week. Summer Tennis Camp Certified USPTA Instructor Joe Ditcher will be hosting a fun and affordable week of tennis instruction at the Recreation Complex. gam la - Summer Lunch Program The Youth Center has been chosen as a summer feeding site for all children ages 18 and under. A free lunch will be provided to any child who comes to the Youth Center, Monday through Friday, during specified times. Third Annual Space Coast Dragon Boat Festival Manatee Sanctuary Park hosted the 3rd edition of the Walgreens Space Coast Dragon Boat Festival on Saturday April 18, 2015. The event brings culture, sport and international flavors to Cape Canaveral and blends a 2,500 year -old tradition with the fun and excitement of an outdoor festival. The Festival is one of nine Walgreens Major League Dragon Boat Series events produced by GWN Dragon Boat and is the first stop of the circuit. Teams from all over Florida signed up for this regatta to compete in three distance racing events along the Banana River. With divisions for both competitive and recreational crews, it's the perfect festival to kick-start the paddling season. The Festival is a wonderful time for the community. Spectators came down to Manatee Sanctuary Park to watch the rowers and enjoy the day by the river. The Walgreens Health and Wellness Village provided participants and spectators with products and services to help maintain a healthy lifestyle while families with children enjoyed games and activities at the Kids Zone. .um1,1111101,11111In VYuiup., 111111111 Y1 11111111101111 1,0 Youth Basketball A new season of summer co-ed 3v3 Youth Basketball will begin June 9th. All players from 13 to 17 years old are encouraged to register for this awesome program.
